Ricky Maldonado - biography
Ricky Maldonado was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1953 to a large, close family. He carries Apache and
Yaqui blood. Maldonado worked at highly creative but non-artistic jobs. After many years he realized that what
he really wanted to do was to explore his fascination with clay. He learned and perfected the basic skills of coil
building and decorating large pots in the Native American fashion at community art classes in late 1991. He
was soon given a one-man show by the city of Burbank in 1993. He showed 83 pieces. After viewing the show,
the Director of the Garth Clark Gallery urged
Maldonado to enter the Otis/Parsons Institutes of Art to further study ceramics. Through these studies he
widened his artistic range and further developed technically.
Maldonado lives in Los Angeles where he has his full-time studio. Maldonado's pots are all hand coiled, slip
decorated, burnished and then glazed with thousands of dots using a sable brush.
Maldonado has received many awards including NCECA's Emerging Artists Award for 2003 and has just
received a Judges award in the First Taiwan Ceramic Biennale 2004.
Ricky Maldonado is a multiple award winner known for his geometrically detailed  pottery. Maldonado's work
is collected internationally. He is a master coil builder. His pieces are hand burnished, slip decorated and
over glazed. He is known for his incredible ability to make new designs and his passion for ceramic art in
general
